Edward Handley Warner and Jessie Nancy Warner of Quorn Hall
Edward Handley Warner was born in Loughborough in 1850. His father (Edward Warner) owned the large hosiery company in Loughborough, Cartwright and Warner, and bought Quorn Hall in 1855. Although Edward (senior)’s, children weren’t born there, they spent much of their childhood in Quorn.
On 21st June 1877, at Barkby Church, EHW married Jessie Nancy Brooks, eight years his junior. Edward Warner (senior) died at Quorn Hall in 1894 and by 1901 Edward Handley Warner, Jessie and their family had moved into this prestigious property, which up until 1905 still housed the Quorn Hunt.
The Warners remained at Quorn Hall until 1919. Their contribution to the village is often unrecognised, but was hugely significant. The full story of ‘The Warner Family at Quorndon Hall. 1855 – 1919’, is covered in depth in Artefact 2591, and is essential reading for anyone who wants to learn more about this family that did so much for our village and for Loughborough.
EHW died in 1925 aged 75 years and Jessie died in 1951 at the grand age of 93.
Photographs of the Warners
For many years it has been frustrating that despite the status of the family, hardly any images of them could be traced. Then in March 2025 all that changed! Peter Warner, a great grandson of Edward Handley Warner and Jessie, contacted the museum team. The photographs below show:
1) Edward Handley Warner
2) Jessie Nancy Warner
3) Jessie Nancy Brooks as a small child (early 1860s)
Peter remembers being told about his great grandmother Jessie being a very strong woman: “She was formidable in old age; my mother was terrified when introduced by my father as his prospective bride during the war (he was spitfire pilot and she worked in the drawing offices at Farnborough).”
