The QUORN Tool and Cutter Grinder
Since its launch in 1974, the Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder has achieved legendary status within the model engineering world as the ultimate project for the home workshop. Recognised as the embodiment of great design, the Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder incorporated many fine ideas and can take on almost any workshop grinding task. Although building the Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder is not an easy task there are almost two thousand units built since its introduction.
Dennis Chaddock the designer (see picture below), lived in Paddock Close, Quorn and was working on a scaled model racing engine when he realised that it would require a lot of small cutters to produce so, in true model engineering tradition, he set about designing and building the tools that would make the model.
Professor D.H. Chaddock, C.B.E., M.Sc. Eng, F.I.Mech.E. was born on July 28, 1908 and had an illustrious career in engineering. After completing a five-year apprenticeship with Adolph Sauer AG in Switzerland he returned to England working in Birmingham where after taking evening classes he attended London University obtaining a Bachelor of Science, Engineering degree. During World War II, he enlisted with the British Army and was commissioned as a Lieutenant with the Royal Army Ordinance Corps. On discharge in 1946 he then worked as a civil servant with the Ministry of Defence mainly on ballistics. His CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) was awarded for this work. He moved to Quorn in 1966 taking up the position of Professor of Engineering Design at Loughborough University. Retiring in 1978 he was not ready to give up his interest in model making and registered ‘Quorn Engineering’, named after the village. Under this banner as well as the ‘Quorn’ he worked as a consultant, an expert witness and continued as a Professor Emeritus.
He died on September 18, 1992. The Quorn Tool and Cutter Grinder was developed as a means-to-an-end, allowing him to create the unavailable shapes and sizes of cutters required for his models, it has become a lasting tribute to his prowess as a professional engineer. A legend that has evolved through the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 and is still being supplied to model engineers throughout the world.
