Barkers Directory 1875 – Quorndon entries

Trade directories are a valuable source of information for both the local and family historian. Below is the Quorndon section from Barkers directory for Leicestershire for 1875.

“Quorndon, a chapelry in the parish of Barrow-upon-Soar, hundred of West Goscote, 2 ½ miles South-East of Loughborough, and one mile South-West of Barrow-upon-Soar Railway Station. It is situated on the river Soar, and Loughborough canal, and near the midland Railway. The town is well lighted with gas, and paved. The inhabitants are generally employed in stocking-weaving, and the manufacture of plain and fancy hosiery. The Church, dedicated to St Bartholomew, is an ancient structure, with square tower, containing six bells. The living is a Vicarage, value £120 per annum. Patron, the Bishop of Peterborough. The Rev Robert Stammers, MA is the vicar. The Wesleyans, Primitive Methodists, and Baptists have each a place of worship. The kennels of Quorn hunt are situated in this neighbourhood. Quorn Hall and Quorn House are the principal residences. Population, in 1871 was 1516, and 390 inhabited houses. Letters via Loughborough. Money Orders are issued and paid. Post office Savings’ Bank, Telegraph office, &c. Thomas North postmaster.
