Post Office Directory 1855 for Leicestershire – Quorndon Section
“Post Office Directory of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Rutlandshire” – Extracts relating to Quorn
Trade directories are a valuable source of information for both the local and family historian. Below is the Quorndon section from the Post Office’s Leicestershire Directory for 1855.
“Quorndon usually called Quorn, is a chapelry, township and suburb of Barrow-upon-Soar, near the Midland railway, on the west side of the navigable river Soar in Barrow-upon-Soar parish and Union, West Goscote Hundred, Peterborough bishopric, North Leicestershire, 1 mile south-west of Barrow-upon-Soar station 2 ½ south-east of Loughborough, 1 ½ north-west of Mount sorrel, 8 ½ north of Leicester, and 114 from London. The population, 1,876 in number, are chiefly employed in framework knitting, lace glove making, etc. The number of acres is 1,960. The living is a perpetual curacy, valued at £122, in the gift of the vicar of Barrow and incumbency of the Rev Robert Stammers MA. The church of St Bartholomew is an old building with a nave, north and south aisles, square tower, and 6 bells. There is a Baptist chapel, and others for Wesleyans and Primitive Methodists; also a National and Infant school. Here are kennels and stables of the celebrated Quorn hunt, of which Sir Richard Sutton Bart., is master.
Quorndon House is the seat of Edward Basil Farnham Esq MP for the northern division of the county, and is situated to the south of the village. The Hall and the seat of Sir Richard Sutton Bart., is on the north-east. There are charities of the annual value of £60. A gas company has recently been established here, called the Quorndon and Mountsorrel Gas, Coke and Coal Company, for the purpose of lighting these towns with gas. It has added much to the comfort and convenience of the inhabitants generally, and has been a great improvement to the respective parishes. Gas is now being gradually introduced for other purposes than that of lighting, and amongst other things, it may be seen applied as a substitute for an ordinary coal fire. An apparatus of the latter description has been fitted up in the committee room of the Company’s works here.”
