Air Raid Precaution members c1944

Air Raid Precaution members wore the mixture of uniform and private clothing which marked some of the voluntary bodies. Note the straps which probably supported gas masks, and steel helmets which each person had to carry whilst on duty. The A.R.P, often called 'Wardens', dealt with different civil defence problems ranging from minor fires to rescue.
