Local Gale Damage 1962
Loughborough Echo - 16th February 1962
A tremendous gale which sprang up during Sunday night and did not begin to abate until late on Monday afternoon did a great deal of damage in Loughborough and district. Some gusts were estimated at 120 mph and even old residents said they had not known such a severe wind.
Among the many casualties were three residents of Farnham Street, Quorn who were struck by a falling garden wall, receiving injuries which caused them to be detained in hospital.
The three injured were Mrs A Wallis, of 45 Farnham Street; Mrs A E Westley, also of Farnham Street; and Mr Fred Main, of 43 Farnham Street. Mrs Wallis was returning from her doctor's with her friend, Mrs Westley, when the wall collapsed on them. The two ladies and Mr Main were trapped. Mr Main was admitted to Loughborough General Hospital with head injuries and shock. Mrs Wallis was treated for chest injuries and Mrs Westley was transferred to Leicester Royal Infirmary with a fractured thigh.
Mr Harold Wallin, who was in his grocery shop at the corner of Farnham Street and Barrow Road, heard the wall collapse. "I looked through the window and saw people pulling bricks away. By the time I got there other people were helping to release those who were trapped, so I ran back to the shop and rang for an ambulance."
Two ambulances were directed to the scene by radio.
The photograph shows a drive and gateway blocked by fallen boughs on Loughborough Road.
