Quorn Sailors' and Soldiers' Fund 1918

Loughborough Herald - 29th August 1918

Fancy Dress Parade

In aid of the local Soldiers' and Sailors' Presents Fund, a fancy dress parade and sports were held on Saturday afternoon. Although not so large as on some previous occasions, the parade included a number of interesting and pretty costumes.

Assembling at the Village hall, and headed by the Barrow-on-Soar Prize Band, a tour of the streets was made, a good number of people congregating to watch the proceedings. Amongst the characters represented were a fishing party, munition workers, a bridal party, and a very effective turnout of a fruit and vegetable stall. Prizes were awarded to the following:
Fruit and Vegetables, Mr Horsley and party; mounted character, Miss Bowler, Red Indians; walking characters, fisherman and wife; mounted character, "Ride-a Cock Horse", Miss Benskin; fancy dress, Miss Kinch and Miss Selwood. A collection was taken en route, and with a special donation of £5, realised £23. The Quorn and Mountsorrel troop of B.P. Scouts, with their bugle bands, were in the procession, under Scoutmaster E Stocks.

In the evening sports were provided in the Stafford Orchard, where a large crowd assembled. The successful competitors were: 80 yards race for men over 40, 1 - A Brown. Girls' egg and spoon race: 1 - D Lucas. Boys under 14, 80 yards flat: 1 - G Birkin. Girls' under 12, 80 yards: 1 - E White. Girls' half mile walking race: 1- D Lucas. Boys' 80 yards flat race: 1 - H Benskin.

A variety of amusements were well patronised, and the band played for dancing. The prizes were presented to the successful competitors by Miss Buddicum. During the evening a prize-drawing took place for 35 prizes. The committee need for this year's working £150, as there are over 300 men to be provided for, and it is anticipated this sum will be raised. Mr J H Johnson is secretary and Mr H Shuttlewood president of the fund.
