Quorn Fete August 1917
Round the Maypole at the Quorn Fete on behalf of the Soldiers Fund.
The annual parade in aid of the Quorn Sailors' and Soldiers' Parcel Fund took place on Saturday. A procession, headed by the Barrow-on-Soar Silver Prize Band and the Quorn, Mountsorrel and Rothley Boy Scouts, started from the Village Hall at 2.30, and wended its way via School Lane and Soar Side to Quorn Hall, and back by Station Street, The Cross, Loughborough Road, Woodhouse Road, and Meeting Street.
The tableaux represented a Maypole, nurses, slaves of Rome, washing day, Girl Guides, and a ragtime band. There were also a number of characters, several mounted, and other riding decorated cycles. Prizes were awarded as follows: 1, best dressed character, walking, Miss Benskin (Prince Charlie); 2, best mounted character, Miss Bowler (Red Indian); 3, best group, vehicle (washing day), arranged by Mrs Horsley and Mrs Teagle of Quorn; 4, best decorated bicycle, C Flanders (sports). The judges were Messrs T Shenton, E C Laundon, and J Camm and the prizes were distributed by Mr H Percival. The local committee having charge of the arrangements for sending parcels to the 300 or more Quorn boys serving with the colours have already forwarded over 1,000 parcels, costing £400, and this year's effort is to obtain £100, over £20 being raised by collections. Mr H Shuttlewood is chairman, Mr J H Johnson secretary, and Mr E Stocks, treasurer.
