Stan downs nine faggots to become champion
Loughborough Echo - 7th July 1972
It is hardly surprising that Stan Coulsell will not be tackling any more faggots for a while. He had a belly full of them on Friday night - literally!
Stan, of Mill Farm, Chaveney Road, Quorn, won a faggot-eating contest at the village's White Horse public house. He downed nine faggots, weighing a total of 58 and a half ozs., beating the favourite, Alf Spur of 13 Castledine Street, Quorn, by one faggot.
Asked for the secret of his success, as he sported his champion's rosette and tankard, Stan said: "years of intensive study make for really relaxed stomach muscles."
There were seven contestants and 82 faggots were bought for the contest from a local butcher. Mrs Ethel Burton, of Sileby, presented the award and the adjudicator was Mr Frank Matthews.
Police constable Mick Winterton, of 55 Cowdray Close, Loughborough, organised the contest on behalf of the International Police Association - of which he is the Leicester and Rutland chairman.
In September, the Loughborough division of the IPA are to take on a faggot-eating team from Birmingham, and next year are to challenge a team from America.
