Garden Fete 1915
Loughborough Herald - 9th September 1915.
Judging by the attendance up to four o'clock, no fewer than four hundred - the garden fete held yesterday afternoon in the beautiful grounds of One Ash, Quorn, in aid of the local Nursing Association and the Red Cross Society, looks like being a huge success. No pains had been spared by Mr and Mrs Wm Wright to make the function attractive and enjoyable. In the organisation of the fete, valuable assistance was rendered by the members of the Quorn Nursing Association, of which Mrs Wright is the secretary, and several ladies from Leicester.
There were attractions in almost every nook and corner; the lawn on the west side of the house was set apart for the stalls, which were heavily laden with all kinds of articles. In the house a bridge tournament was played under the direction of Mrs R Harvey and Mrs David Gimson. Among those present were the Rev H H Rumsey, Mrs Rumsey, Ald W and Mrs Moss, Councillor and Mrs H Clemerson, Mr Hawkes Woodward, Mrs J Harriman, Mr W Evans JP., Mr W Evans, jun., Ald A A Bumpus, JP., Mrs R S Clifford, Mrs W W Coltman, Mr Draper, Mr Stockdale Harrison, Mrs Reed, Lieut. G Harvey, Mrs Unitt, &c.
The stallholders were as follows: General, Mrs Wm Wright, Mrs Stevens, Mrs Steeds and Mrs James. Sweets, Mrs Evans, Mrs Wykes, Mrs A Oram, Mrs D Oram, Mrs Shirley Harrison, Mrs H P Atkins and Mrs Stockdale Harrison. Cigarettes, Mrs Hubbersty, Mrs Oliver, Mrs Sidney Wright, Mrs Fosbrooke, Mrs Strachan and Miss Walker. Refreshments, Mrs Barnett, Mrs Crosby, Mrs Flude, Mrs Chitham, Mrs R S Clifford, jun., Mrs Wright, Miss Jennie Moss, Mrs Kirk and Miss Henson. Gifts, Mrs Hawkes Woodward, Mrs G White, Mrs Adams, Mrs Fewkes, Mrs Ingleston and Mrs Payne.
The side shows were in charge of the following: skittles, J Tuckwood; shooting at goal, J Bentley (for some time goalkeeper to Quorn Havelock); shooting range, T Morrison; Germhun head shie (sic), G J V Crosby.
Prior to the event about £40 had been raised by subscriptions and the raffling off of a pig. A large number of the wounded soldiers from the Charnwood Forest Home were conveyed to the fete in motor cars, and they had a most enjoyable afternoon. The whole of the grounds and gardens were open to the public, and in the evening the attendance swelled considerably.
