Jack Payne's shop

Jack Payne repaired shoes from the front room of his home in Station Road (now 4 Station Road) for over sixty years. This photograph was taken before the 'black green' was made into a car park by Charnwood Borough Council. In the mid 1990s the shop became a Chinese takeaway.

Ian Hutchinson, who used to live in the thatched cottage, 2 Station Road, kindly got in touch with the Museum Team and supplied the following information:

"I believe this photograph was taken in 1961.
Jack Payne had a daughter name Annie. Annie Become Mrs. Jollands when she married Ted Jollands sometime in the 1950's. Ted for many years, was the night watchman for Wrights. The photographer for the picture stood with their back to Wrights main gate.

In the caravan to the right lived Jimmy and Alma Thomas. They were travelling fair people that decided to settle down and start a business. They became very successful making machines that put out the balls in a bingo game.
The travelling fair would set up in the car park (the old village green) shown in the picture. A once-a-year event.

To the left is the thatch cottage (out of view) that Harry and Dorothy Hutchinson purchased in 1958. Harry and his wife ran a butcher's shop. In 1973 a completely new thatch roof was installed. At this time, it was discovered that the cottage was a cruck cottage and this helped to estimate the build date of 1580."
