Soldier's Death 1916
Loughborough Monitor - 10th August 1916
The death of Pte. Charles Ottey took place at Huddersfield on Sunday morning. The deceased soldier was wounded on July 1st, and was removed to Huddersfield, where he contracted double pneumonia and died, as stated, on Sunday. He enlisted in December last, and was attached to the Sherwood Foresters. He was 18 years of age, and previous to his enlistment he was employed at Messrs M Wright and Sons, Quorn Mills.
He was also a sergeant in the local C.L.B and was also in the V.T.C., and for a number of years had been chorister and soloist in the Parish Church choir. At the funeral a good number of parishioners attended to show a last tribute of respect. The Vicar (the Rev H H Rumsey) conducted the service in the church and at the graveside. The service was fully choral. In the church the hymns "Glorious things of Thee are spoken" and "Fight the good fight" were sung and the Dead March from "Saul" was played. At the graveside the hymn "Let saints on Earth" was sung. In addition to the family mourners there were present representatives of the local C.L.B and V.T.C and Major Adams (representing the North Leicestershire Cadets Battalion). The coffin was draped with the Union Jack, and bore a wreath of laurels from the numerous, and included wreaths from the employees of Messrs M Wright, the Belgian families in the village, also from his sick and wounded comrades in hospital, and the nurses and matron from the Huddersfield Hospital.
The flag of St George flew from the church at half-mast. In the evening a muffled peal was rung on the bells.
