Quorn's Coronation pageant and comic football rained off - 1953
Loughborough Monitor - 5th June 1953
A few dejected figures, hands in raincoat pockets, stood about Quorn's Stafford Orchard on Tuesday evening. This was where the village Coronation celebrations were to have been held - but the visitors who arrived were told that festivities had been postponed indefinitely. The rain had turned the field into a quagmire.
In the evening were to have been held a comic football match, an historical pageant arranged by Quorn Amateur Dramatic Society, a tug-of-war, cycle speedway display, ham-cutting contest, and a fireworks display.
But the rain did not prevent early celebrations from taking place. A united service took place at the parish church in the morning, with a fancy dress parade at lunchtime. Children's sports were held in the afternoon. Not all the souvenir mugs were presented, the remainder will be distributed at the Village Hall this evening.
Some 40 members attended the Coronation dinner of the Pig and Whistle darts club. Mr W Sutton and Mr D Freer officiated. Artists at a social evening which followed were Messrs D Freer, J Fallow and S Freeman, with Mr J Beswick at the piano. Mr S Hardbattle proposed a vote of thanks to the host and hostess.
Additional information:
The winners of the fancy dress competition were twins, Angela and Rosemary Bent who lived on Spinney Drive, Quorn.
