Quorn War Weapons Week 1941

Wednesday: £22,700.
Wednesday was the high day of War Weapons Week in Quorn, and an extensive programme of varied and interesting events was provided and carried out in the presence of large crowds.
The Birstall ARP rescue squad rescued a (dummy) body from the roof of Messrs Wright's factory. The searchlights were manipulated by a party, while Sergt. Howman explained the working through the microphone.
Fire fighting parties from Quorn, Anstey, Mountsorrel, Rothley and Barrow demonstrated their work. Coun. J J Stirling (of the committee), Mrs Nihell-Preau (WVS), Platoon Commdr Belton of the Home Guard, Lieut-Col W S N Toller, Major Woolmer (Head ARP Warden), Mr F Bunney (British Legion) and Mr E Tomlyn (AFS) all addressed the crowd and the Mountsorrel Town Band conduced by Mr H Dakin discoursed sweet music, as did a broadcasting van.
All this took place in or near Stafford Orchard, and towards nine o'clock, the crowd gravitated towards the selling shop (now at Westminster Bank) in High Street to see the figure on the indicator giving the takings of the various selling centres up to date. These were Saturday, £2,708; Monday, £5,419, Tuesday, £7,954; Wednesday, £22,700.
The Blooming Rose Lodge, I.O.O.F., had decided to invest £150 in 3 per cent Defence Bonds for Quorn War Weapons Week.
The recent whist drive given by Mesdames Towell and Preston in aid of Quorn War Weapons Week, realised the sum of £5 6s 6d.
A dance of old fashioned numbers was held in the Church Room on Wednesday evening as part of the War Week proceedings. Bert Hickling's Band played. A competition was won by Mr Onions. All who paid for admission were given back sixpence in the form of a savings stamp.
At the savings shop in High-St., is to be seen a selection of original war savings posters painted by scholars of the Rawlins School, in a competition held there. Miss W Sarson was the judge and the winners were:- Seniors (13 years and over): 1, R Bennett; 2, S Gregory; 3, F Banbury; 4, G Brookes. (9 to 12 years): 1, B North; 2, D Clarke, 3, B Lane; 4, F Stockwell. (8 years and under): 1, O Gregory; 2, J Underwood; 3, A Smith; consolation: T Orme, M Rayns, H Mellors, B Heafford, P Morris, E Mills, J Godden, B Norman.
