Sale of a wife

The London Dispatch - 9th September 1838

On Thursday morning last the upper end of Loughborough Market-place was the scene of much confusion and disturbance, arising from the expectation of the "sale of a wife", near the Boot Inn. A large crowd of persons had assembled about eleven o'clock, as the audience on the occasion - a person from Quorndon, the auctioneer and proprietor - and his wife the party about to be sold.

Through the interference, however, of Harris, the policeman, this singular exhibition was prevented, the lady being subjected to the alternative of going home quietly, or being consigned to the lock-up.
