Nearly a Romantic Disaster

Daily News - 28th September 1846

Story of a Wedding.
The inhabitants of Quorndon, more especially the female portion, were, on Tuesday morning, much amused by the following circumstances:- A gentleman from the neighbourhood of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, was about to be united in the holy bonds of matrimony, to a young lady of the above place; and the happy couple, with their attendants, arrived at the Baptist Chapel, where the ceremony was to be solomnised, and where the registrar and minister were in attendance, when they found that the gentleman had not brought a certificate of the notice from the Superintendent Registrar of the Union in which he resided.

It was now half-past eight o'clock, and the arrangements made were not of a nature to admit of delay if it was possible to be avoided. To obtain a certificate not less that 30 miles across a hilly country were to be traversed; but nothing daunted, the gentleman took post-chaise to the King's Head Hotel, Loughboro', and there procured a horse and gig, with which he went to Ashby-de-la-Zouch and back in much less time than many expected, and the chaise was in readiness to convey him back to Quorndon immediately on his return.

The ladies, unwilling to expose themselves to the gaze of their gossiping neighbours, sat in the vestry or school-room adjoining the chapel, while the bridegroom performed the journey; and some who thought he would not return sufficiently early to be married that day, were astonished to see him enter the chapel with the required document at a quarter past 11 o'clock - two hours and three quarters after leaving it.
