Quorn group to dance in France

Loughborough Monitor - 21st September 1973

Nine members of the Quorn Folk Dancing Club will be taking part next week in the festivities at the annual trade fair at Romans sur Isere, in the south of France. The group will be among a party of 21 who leave for France on September 28 to represent Coalville, which is twinned with the French town.

The invitation to represent the town was received by the Leicestershire and Rutland district of the English Folk and Dance Society, and the Quorn group will be joined by musicians from Scallywags Band and dancers from the Friday Folk, of Leicester. The festival will take the form of an afternoon procession through the streets, with stops for dancing, and exhibition dancing on stage in the evening.

There will also be national dance groups from Italy, Spain, Czechoslovakia and districts of France at the event, and some 600 are expected to take part.

Mr John Kinch, leader of the Quorn group, told the Monitor that the group were hoping to exchange ideas and dances with the local French groups and would be arriving back home on Tuesday October 2.

The Quorn dancers began as a night class at Rawlin's College four years ago, and have since organised a number of events in the village. They will be hold a Ceilidh on October 7, at Rawlin's Community College.
