The story of Eliza Ryder and William Brown of Quorn

Eliza Ryder was born as Eliza Brown in Quorn in 1838. Her father was profoundly deaf and unable to talk, and the family could not afford the 2d a week to send Eliza to school.
Through census returns and other research, it was possible to piece together Eliza's story - and even find a photograph of her and her blind son, William, which had been hidden in plain sight on a postcard.
