Poole Farm, Quorn – Hugh and Rachael Gibbs 1956-1976

Poole Farm, originally part of the Quorn Hall Estate was sold by Mr. E. H Warner in 1919, it passed to Leicestershire County Council, who wanted to allow men that had served in the Great War to return to agriculture. Men could apply for a farm or a field. In Quorn parish, both Home Farm, in Soar Road and Poole Farm, in Barrow Road were part of this scheme. It was farmed by Mr H Horspool, Mr Billy Pepper, the Bailey Brothers and Mr. N. Hutchinson before it passed to Mr and Mrs Hugh Gibbs.

Poole Farm is situated at the end of a lane off Barrow Road and the farmhouse was erected in the eighteenth century.

The Gibbs family farmed there from 1956 until 1976 when, due to ill health Hugh had to give up farming. The farm was later abandoned and in the early 2000s the county council submitted plans for a change of use.

The attached document was written after visiting Rachael Gibbs who supplied the photos and information. It covers their life there up to the equipment and herd sale in 1975. Rachael now (March 2026) lives in Barrow upon Soar.
