Captain Thomas Farnham, RN (1743-1793)

The Farnham family were a prominent and long-standing landowners in Quorn since 1243, residing at Quorn Over Hall and later Quorn House. They were influential in the village until 1993.

Thomas Farnham was born on October 30th, 1743, at Quorn Over Hall and when 28 years of age joined the Royal Navy where he was to have a distinguished career. He came to prominence in the American War of Independence, commanding HMS Nautilus during Commodore Sir George Collier’s Penobscot campaign. Later he inherited the Quorn estate which, after his death in 1793 passed to his brother Edward.

Apart from his name appearing on a family memorial in the Farnham Chapel at St. Bartholomew’s Church, little is known of him in Quorn. This article has been put together to correct that using information from various websites and publications including: MoreThanNelson.com, 3decks and John Nichols ‘The history and antiquities of the county of Leicester’.
