PC Thomas Henry Thornton, a Quorn Police Constable

The name PC Thornton crops up in many Quorn newspaper articles between 1899 and 1923.

Thomas Henry Thornton was born in Willoughby Waterleys, Leicestershire in 1873 and when he left school, he initially became a farm servant, like his father. When he was 21 (in 1894) he joined the police force, before marrying Maud Elizabeth Cox in Ashby in 1901. Over the next fourteen years they had three children: Thomas Herbert in 1902, Claude in 1913 and Olive Maud in 1915.

Although it is recorded that PC Thornton moved to Quorn in 1908, from newspaper reports it shows that he undertook some policing duties in Quorn from as early as 1899, so knew the village well before the family relocated to 30 Leicester Road, Quorn (Quorn Terrace) in 1908.

The following item appeared in the Leicester Daily Mercury on Tuesday 17th July 1923

Retirement - PC Thornton who has been stationed at Quorn since 1908, has retired. The Urban District Council contemplate making suitable recognition of his services. Before coming to Quorn PC Thornton was stationed at Hinckley, Loughborough, Nanpantan and Wymeswold. He has been a member of the Police Force for 28 ½ years.
