Facers Timber Yard, fire 1985

On 5th November 1985 there was a huge fire at Facer’s timber yard on Meeting Street and the whole woodyard was destroyed. See also Artefact 453.

This unique photograph was taken very shortly afterwards from inside the site, looking back towards Meeting Street.

The area was developed for housing a few years later and is now Sanders Road. The name of the road is taken from the Sanders family who also had a timber yard, but were located at what is now 27 Meeting Street, from 1832 to 1920.
