John Mellor Cars, Wood Lane, Quorn
John Mellor Cars had premises in Loughborough and Quorn. The Quorn garage was on the corner of Wood Lane and Leicester Road.
John Mellor Cars seems to have started in Devonshire Square, Loughborough, in the 1960s. He opened the Wood Lane premises in Quorn in 1969. The firm continued in Quorn until the late 1980s and closed their Loughborough garage in the 1990s.
The car sticker below, has the phone number Quorn 3100, and exists on a Plymouth Cricket that was reputedly sold as new by John Mellor Cars in October 1971. The story that the current owner has been told (2024), is that the car is in effect an American specification Hillman Avenger, known as a Plymouth Cricket. This car was reputedly a prototype, was always right hand drive and never left the UK. It is believed that John Mellor bought the car from Chrysler in Coventry and sold it though his Quorn garage.
The John Mellor Cars key ring fob below, dates from between 1976 (when all Quorn phone numbers became five digits by having a 4 added at the front) and 1984 (when all Quorn numbers became 6 digit numbers with the addition of a 1 after the leading 4). On one side the fob says:
“John Mellor Cars, Wood Lane, Quorn, Leicester Tel 43100”
And on the other side it says:
“Packe Street Showrooms, Packe Street, Loughborough, Tel 234979”
