Barrow on Soar and Quorn Midland Railway Station
The old, now demolished, Midland Railway Station was very firmly in the Parish of Barrow upon Soar, but after the Great Central Railway opened Quorn and Woodhouse Station in 1899, it had somewhat of an identity crisis!
Barrow Station was opened in 1840, and would also have served the people of Quorn, being only about a mile from Quorn Cross. When the Great Central opened in 1899, recognising the competition, the name of Barrow Station was promptly changed to ‘Barrow on Soar and Quorn’.
In 1908 Station Road, Quorn became so named, because it ‘led to the station in Barrow’, having been known previously as Barrow Street. It is not known who made this decision, but over the years it has caused both puzzlement and confusion!
The photograph (date unknown), shows Barrow on Soar and Quorn Station prior to its closure in 1968. The station was later demolished and in 1994 a new ‘Barrow upon Soar’ Station was opened about 400 metres to the south-east.
