Loughborough Road – Then and Now

This is Loughborough Road, standing opposite Barrow Road, looking from Quorn towards Loughborough. The finger post sign gives the mileages to Barrow on Soar (sic), Walton on the Wolds and Burton on the Wolds.

The two larger houses on the left are now numbers 14 and 16, but at the time when the photograph was taken in the early 1900s, they were known as Sunny Bank and Ferndale and built by Quorn builder Benjamin Fewkes. Benjamin lived in Ferndale and Sunny Bank was the home of his granddaughter Margery Annie Speight (nee Mee, known as Annie) and her husband Herbert Holmes Speight.

Mike Speight, grandson of Annie and Herbert Speight, tells us that his grandparents later moved into what is now 12 Loughborough Road, and he believes transferred the name Sunny Bank to the new house. His Uncle, Harold Mee (Arthur Harold) and his wife Ida lived at Number 10.
