A Tribute to the American Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne, 3rd May 1952

Quorn Local History Group encourage members to take on projects and to research areas of Quorn’s rich history and heritage. Dennis Marchant took on the task of going through the Parish Councils archives to ensure items that were of historic interest were preserved. In doing so he came across a ‘bulldog’ clipped wodge of correspondence relating to the events of Saturday May 3rd, 1952. This article summarised the day and was originally titled ‘A Tribute to the American Forces’ as the correspondence referred only to the Americans or the American Forces; but it was agreed with the editor to change it for publication to ‘A Tribute to the American Paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne’ on the basis that the village is now more familiar with the regimental and division nomenclatures. Some illustrations included here did not appear in the original published article.
The article appeared in the March 2020 edition of The Quorndon Village Life magazine. Later, further correspondence came to light regarding the fate of some of the ‘Lime Trees’. This has been added at the end of the article.
