Kelly's Directory 1899 – Quorndon entries

Directories are a valuable source of information for both the local and family historian. Below is the Quorndon section from one of the famous Kellys directories, ie for Leicestershire for 1899.

QUORN (formerly called Quorndon) is a township and civil parish formed out of Barrow-upon-Soar in 1868, on the west side of the navigable river Soar, on the road from Leicester to Loughborough, a mile south-west from Barrow-upon-Soar station on the main line of the Midland railway, 2 ½ miles south-east from Loughborough, 8 ½ north from Leicester and 106 ½ from London. in the Mid division of the county, West Goscote hundred, Loughborough petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of East Akeley, archdeaconry of Leicester and diocese of Peterborough.
The township is governed by a Local Board from 1864 but an Urban District Council of nine members has been established under the provision of the “Local Government Act, 1984” (56 and 57 Vic. c.73) . The village is lighted with gas by the Quorndon and Mountsorrel Gas, Coke and Coal Company from works in this parish, which also supply Barrow on Soar. Water is supplied by the Corporation of Leicester from the Swithland reservoir. The church of St. Bartholomew is an ancient building of granite, chiefly in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south or Farnham chapel, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 8 bells, five cast in 1773, one in 1777 and two in 1886: the chancel windows are stained: the east window being a memorial to Charlotte Elizabeth, the only daughter of Edward Warner esq. of Quorn Hall and another, erected by subscription, is a memorial to the Rev Robert Stammers MA, 55 years vicar of the parish (1832-1888); there are also stained windows in the aisles and the north doorway retains a good Norman arch: in the Farnham Chapel is a beautifully sculptured monument, erected by Sarah (Farnham), the late Countess of Denbigh, 1817, to several members of the Farnham family ; there are also two large marble-framed brasses with arms and inscriptions to Edward Farnham Esq of Quorndon, as well as a memorial window to Edward Farnham esq. d. 1835 and Harriett (Rhudde) his wife, to their son Edward Basil Farnham esq. of Quorndon, M.P. d. 1879, and their daughter Sarah Ann: in the church is a fine-alter tomb of alabaster, with recumbent effigies, to John Farnham, gentleman pensioner to Queen Elizabeth, d. 1587 and Dorothy his wife, besides several tombs of the 16th century to the same family: in 1887 W.E.B. Farnham esq. Presented an organ, at a cost of upwards of £600 in commemoration of the Queen's Jubilee, and in 1897 an organ chamber was added by E.H. Warner esq. In memory of E Warner and Mary Anne his wife: the church has been restored since 1873, at a cost of £770 and affords 400 sittings. The registers date from 1576. Thomas Walton is mentioned in 1645 as “intending minister”. The parish of Quorndon was separated for ecclesiastical purposes from Barrow in 1757, the vicar of Barrow continuing to claim the freehold in the churchyard. The living is a vicarage, gross yearly value £200, including 61 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Peterborough, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Edward Foord Kelcey MA of Pembroke College, Oxford. Here are Baptist, Wesleyan, Primitive Methodist and Free Methodist chapels. Charities – Hyde’s of about £28 yearly is for clothing; the Town Lands or Unknown Donors’ produces about £150 and Thomas Rawlin’s about £70; Prior’s of about £6 12s a year is given in bread on New Year’s Day; Kay’s of 30s yearly, is distributed amongst 30 poor persons attending church on that day; Miss Farnham’s of £15 and Ansted’s of £5 13s are distributed in groceries. M. Wright and Sons' elastic web factory gives employment to a large number of females. Here are the kennels and stables of the celebrated Quorn Hunt, established about 150 years ago, of which Capt. J. Burns-Hartopp J.P. of Scraptoft Hall is master; Melton Mowbray, Leicester and Loughborough are convenient places for hunting visitors. Quorn House, the seat of George Francis Farnham esq. is well situated in a park of about 100 acres south of the village. Quorn Hall, the seat of Edward Handley Warner esq. J.P. Pleasantly situated on the bank of the river Soar, was erected by one of the Farnham family as a hunting lodge, between the years 1670-80. The Earl of Lanesborough is lord of the manor. The principal landowners are William Hanley Warner esq. Mrs. Perry-Herrick of Beaumanor Park and the Earl of Lanesborough and George Francis Farnham esq. The soil is light and sandy; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans and roots. The area is 2,193 acres of land and 27 of water; rateable value, £11,699; the population in 1891 was 1,888.
