Caves Field, Quorn, ridge and furrow 2022

This photograph of Caves Field (the cricket field), taken during the heatwave of August 2022, shows the remains of old ‘ridge and furrow’, with green grass in the furrows.

Ridge and furrow was created when farming was carried out under the medieval 'strip system', whereby villagers owned or rented strips in different fields. Ploughing strips over many years caused the distinctive pattern. After the Quorndon Enclosure Award of 1763, strips were brought together to form fields and larger areas were awarded to landowners. If ridge and furrow is still visible, it means that the field has not been ploughed for crops since the Enclosure Award and has just been used for pasture.
