Soar Road, Quorn, about 1910

A postcard of Soar Road showing children playing in and around the River Soar in about 1910.

The wooden fence was later replaced by concrete posts and wooden rails, before being replaced again in the 1990s with the granite wall which forms part of Quorn’s flood defences today. The road is not made up and there is no pavement. Santa Maria Lodge and Santa Maria bridge can be seen on the outside of the corner where Soar Road turns left into Meynell Road.

The enlargement illustrates how these old photographs can reveal hidden detail when scanned at a high resolution.

There is a large group of children enjoying some recreation on a sunny day. Stafford Orchard (the park) was still just a field, so the river was a great place to play. The lads are fishing and at least one has his trousers rolled up ready for a paddle. Some of the children are very young, probably out in the care of their siblings and two of the girls have prams, presumably looking after baby brothers and sisters.
