The Harper family of Buddon Wood House

John and Harriett Harper married in 1888 and in the early 1900s the couple and their growing family moved from Mountsorrel to a cottage in the middle of Buddon Wood. It was very isolated, had no electricity, no gas and no running water. The land where the cottage stood has long since been blasted away as part of the main quarry.

There were eleven children and despite John not having a particularly well paid job, the family thrived. Their story is told on the attached document, using information provided by Brian Hughes, one of John and Harriett’s great children.
