Quorn WW1 Roll of Honour - Thomas Hutton

Died 26th September 1917, aged 35
Zonnebeke, Belgium

Thomas Hutton was the eldest son of James and Emma Hutton and the brother of James Hutton, who died in October 1917. See Artefact 2304.

Thomas was killed at a level crossing at Zonnebeke in Belgium on 26th September 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele. He had originally enlisted with the Royal Scots in 1900 and served in South Africa during the Boer War. By 1914 he had left the army and was therefore classed as a reservist. This meant that he was required to join up as soon as war was declared and he rejoined his old regiment.

After Thomas was killed the following appeared in Quorn Parish Magazine for November 1917:
“We regret to record the death of Thomas Hutton, killed in action, and we offer his wife and parents our sympathy in their loss.”

Thomas was ten years older than his brother James, and he married Mary Ann Page at Emmanuel Church in Loughborough in July 1909, where Mary (known as Polly) had had her baby son Thomas Charles Page baptised three months earlier. The couple lived for some time with Mary's parents in Coalville, but it seems likely they moved to 19 Chapel Terrace, Southfield Road, Loughborough, as this is the address held by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. After they were married the child was known as Thomas Charles Hutton. He was 8 years old when Thomas was killed. Mary Ann later remarried and in time young Thomas Charles Hutton married too. He stayed in the area, although not in Quorn, and he and his wife had five children.

The photograph shows Rita (left) and Pauline (right), paying their respects at their grandfather’s grave at La Brique Military Cemetery No 2, West-Vlaanderen near Ypres in Belgium.
