Alfred James Camm, Quorn National School prize, 1890

The attached book (see attached PDF file) was presented to Alfred James Camm, a pupil at Quorn National (primary) School in 1890, for having achieved 414 of a possible 430 attendances in the school year.

Alfred was born in Quorn in August 1885 and a photograph of him, together with more details of his life, can be found at Artefact 2237.

The book is called The Fairy Tale Alphabet and is part of ‘The Old Corner Series’, illustrated by Archibald Chasemore. The whole book, including the inscription to Alfred is shown in the attached PDF file.

It is interesting that the book includes several advertisements, which presumably made a big contribution to the publishing costs. It is wonderful to have something that comes from Quorn National School in Victorian times - and would have been handled by the indomitable infant headteacher Miss Corlett!
