Grace Wesley, former Quorn Rawlins pupil, marriage 1924

Grace Wesley was a pupil at Rawlins Grammar School from 1908 to 1912, and afterwards she went on to teach there. Artefact 2103 contains a fascinating autograph book in which Grace collected poems, drawings and other entries throughout her time at Rawlins and all through WW1.

At the time of the publication of Artefact 2103, no photograph of Grace was available. It is always very rewarding to be able to put a face to a story, and this photograph was taken on the occasion of Graceís wedding to Franklin Barlow on 15th December 1924. The museum team are very grateful to Graceís son for providing this wonderful picture.

A press cutting from the time reads:

Woodhouse Eaves Wedding
A pretty wedding of great local interest took place on Monday at St Paulís Church when Miss Grace Mildred Wesley, eldest daughter of Mr Walter Wesley, was married to Mr Franklin Barlow, of Accrington. The Rev A J W Hiley officiated and Mr S H Turner was best man.
The bride who was given away by her father, looked charming in a tunic dress of silver brocade over a cream marocain with veil and wreath. She carried a bouquet of pink carnations and white heather. Her bridesmaid, Miss Kathleen Wesley, was in shell pink crepe-de-chine embroidered in silver, and she carried a bouquet of pink carnations and heather. The Wedding March was played by Mrs Hiley.
After the ceremony a reception was held at the Village Institute, subsequent to which the bridal couple left for Edinburgh.
