Grace Wesley’s autograph book – A Quorn Rawlins ‘Old Girl’

Grace Mildred Wesley was born in 1895 and lived at Woodhouse Eaves, She was the eldest of three children of Walter and Kate Wesley. For her tenth birthday Grace was given a small album, which she used as an autograph book, and she would ask her friends to write in it. Some wrote poems, some just signed their names and others painted or sketched pictures and cartoons.

Grace was a bright girl and in January 1908, when she was thirteen, her parents sent her to Rawlins Grammar School in Quorn, and many of the entries in her book date from this period. When Grace finished school in July 1912, she carried on at Rawlins as a part-time teacher. She continued to collect snippets in the little book throughout WW1, the latest entry is from 1919 – one hundred years ago. In 2018, Grace’s family very kindly donated her album to Rawlins Academy, together with eight prizes she had won during her school career.

A photograph of Grace can be found at Artefact 2225
