Quorn sampler, Elizabeth Winsley Power 1853

Whilst we may think that many girls and young women made samplers in the 18th and 19th centuries, it is hard to find any that came from Quorn. Many samplers are sold to avid collectors, both in England and abroad, so when Sue Templeman tracked down a sampler embroidered by 12 year old Elizabeth Winsley Power, aged 12, from Quorn in 1853, she was very excited!

The PDF file below, is an article that Sue wrote for The Quorndon magazine in Autumn 2016. Her research revealed the story of the illegitimate birth of a baby to a servant girl by a ‘gent’, several years her senior. However, one of the twists in this tale is that they got married – but that was not the end of the story…..
