1834 letter from Ann Carter, Quorn, to the Mayor of New York

In 2015 a letter came up for sale which was written in 1834 by 43 year old Ann Carter from Quorn, to Gideon Lee, the Mayor of New York City. Sue Templeman from Quorn Village On-line Museum, purchased the letter and brought it back to Quorn.

The letter reveals Ann’s heartfelt anguish as she pleads with the Mayor for the release of her son Benjamin, who has been arrested for fraud and is in prison in New York.

This article appeared in the winter edition of The Quorndon magazine in 2015.
