Richard and Sarah Ann Bagley, 28 Wood Lane

This couple are Richard and Sarah Ann Bagley. Richard was born in Markfield in 1849, but married Quorn girl Sarah Ann Smith in 1872. They first lived on School Lane, but spent most of their married life at 28 Wood Lane, in the Wright’s mill cottages. Richard worked at Mountsorrel Quarry, but several of his children worked for Wrights, which could be what entitled them to rent this house.

Richard and Sarah had thirteen children although only eight were still alive in 1911. The couple both lived to good ages, Richard died in 1924 aged 75 and Sarah Ann died in 1936 aged 81. They are both buried in Quorn Churchyard.

The photograph looks as if it was taken in the early 1920s. Richard and Sarah are standing outside the front door of number 28 Wood Lane, with number 30 in view on the right. The lower photograph shows the houses today.
