High Street Quorn, 1944
This postcard of Quorn was printed by Raphael Tuck and Sons, probably one of the most famous and prestigious publishers of postcards. Queen Victoria granted the firm the Royal Warrant of Appointment and in its heyday, the firm also had branches abroad.
The image shows High Street, Quorn, looking towards Loughborough. The first shop on the right, (now number 25 High Street), is Joyce’s the newsagents. This business was later taken over by Kathleen Garrett. Next to the newsagents, across the gap, is Joan’s hairdressers. At one time, this had been Webster’s bakery. The cottages beyond this block are ‘The Banks’ cottages, which were demolished in the early 1970s.
The postmark on the postcard is unclear, but there are two indicators, which have assisted in dating the picture. The cars indicate that it was after 1937 – and then the message on the back ends with:
“.... Cheer up Rosie, the last all clear will soon sound.”
From this it seems likely that the postcard was sent towards the end of WW2, ie about 1944/1945.
