Bertha Webster (nee Sharpe)

This studio photograph was taken in the 1920s, and was part of a collection made available to the museum team by Pete Johnson, whose grandmother was Emily Holmes, formerly Steer, nee Webster (born 1892). It shows a young Bertha Sharpe, from Soar Road, who was born in Quorn in 1908. Bertha went on to marry Cyril Webster in 1934. He was also born in Quorn and lived on Nursery Lane.

It was not obvious why Emily should have had a copy of Bertha’s photograph, and despite the link of the Webster name, a family relationship was not obvious either. It took quite a lot research, covering Loughborough, Leicester and Quorn, to work out exactly how Emily and Bertha were related. This was made more difficult by the very large families, which created a lot of threads to follow! It eventually transpired that Emily and Bertha’s husband Cyril were second cousins. This means they shared great grandparents, William and Elizabeth Webster, both born around 1790. Therefore their grandfathers - ie William and John respectively - were brothers.

Cyril Webster died in 1974 and Bertha, who lived in Mansfield Street, died in 1988. There are more items from Emily and George’s collection elsewhere on the museum site.
