Football Club Concert - 1897
Loughborough Herald - 28th January 1897
The concert held at the Village Hall on Wednesday by the Havelock Football Club was very successful. There was a very good attendance, and the club will benefit therefrom, thanks to the untiring energy of the committee, who worked their hardest to ensure success. Miss Walker was received with unstinted applause in her songs: “Flight of Ages” and “Cuckoo in the Orchard”.
Messrs E W Hensman, F Holdom, and A Hartshorn also sang well, while the humorous element was well sustained by Messrs G H Heafford and A W Turner, who were enthusiastically cheered. Mr Lewis recited in his well-known style, and the Leicester Gymnasium Club gave an excellent performance on the parallel bar, which was watched with great interest and enjoyment. Mr Thorpe was also very good with his banjo and mandoline. The accompanists were Miss Firr and Messrs J R Elliott and W G Hing.
The programme was as follows: Pianoforte duet, the Misses Firr; song “Light Brigade”, Mr Fred Holdom; song, “Orpheus with his lute,”, Miss Walker, banjo solo, “ Queen of burlesque”, Mr T Thorpe; comic song “The grass widower,” Mr G H Heafford; song, “Ora Pro Nobis”, Mr A Hartshorn; recitation, “The lifeboat”, Mr W E Lewis; humorous song, “The fireman”, Mr A W Turner; song, “Cuckoo in the orchard,” Miss Walker; gymnastic performance, Leicester YMCA; song, “Church Bells chime”, Mr Fred Holdom; mandoline solo, “Caroletto polka,” Mr T Thorpe; song “India’s reply”, Mr A Hartshorn; comic song “Ump Ah,” Mr G W Heafford.
