Substantial price reduction - Interview with gas engineer

Loughborough Echo 18th February 1938

The purchase of the Quorn and Mountsorrel Gas Undertaking at a cost of £31,775 by the Loughborough Corporation from the Quorndon and Mountsorrel Gas, Coal and Coke Co. is likely to prove a considerable financial asset to the borough and a boon to the people of Quorn and district.
This was the opinion expressed by Loughborough’s Gas Engineer (Mr. L.P. Ingram) in an interview with a Loughborough Echo reporter this week.

Mr. Ingram stated: “Previous to the Loughborough Corporation taking over the concern, the price of gas in the Quorn area was 5 / 101/2 per thousand cubic feet, whereas today, under the Loughborough Corporation the maximum price is approximately 4 / 8 net, a decrease of about 1 / 21/2 per thousand cubic feet.

“This decrease and the service we are offering, has resulted in a considerable increase in the consumption of gas at Quorn with the result that the Loughborough undertaking is working at full pressure. We have four men on the Loughborough staff and three who were retained at Quorn, and all are working at full pressure to cope with the Quorn demand.

“The demand for appliances has been chiefly for gas cookers, with one or two gas fires, and a gas refrigerator. I think that the concern is now going to be a good thing for everybody. The consumers are now getting more for their money, and everybody has good reason to be pleased about it.!

When this £32,000 concern was purchased by the local Corporation the yearly output was about £39,000,000 cubic feet, and, said Mr. Ingram, this figure should be well exceeded during the coming year.

Mr. Ingram, who is confident that this demand from the Quorn area will be a lasting one, was appointed Gas Engineer at Loughborough on October 1st last.
