Local girl starts own Mission Church - started preaching at 16

Faith in her vocation as a minister and preacher of the Gospel has led a 22-years-old Loughborough girl to start her own church.
She is Miss R.J. Hallam, of 23 Fearon Street, who opened the Barrow Road Mission Hall, Quorn a fortnight ago. A church had been previously carried on at the hall, but was closed three years ago, when the Government took over the property.
Miss Hallam is the daughter of Mr. R.A. Hallam, a society steward at Ashby Road Methodist Church, Loughborough, for over 20 years, and of Mrs. Hallam.
Her first meetings were attended by former members of the church, whom she visited. A deep conviction of the truths of the Bible is the keynote of her addresses and of her work and she spends as much time as she can in furthering her religious ideals.
The new church commenced its activities with a Saturday night meeting conducted by Mr. T. Spurr of Barrow-on-Soar, and on the following day there was a Breaking of Bread service in the afternoon and a Gospel service in the evening which Miss Hallam conducted.
By her own efforts, and with the help of her congregation, she hopes to build the mission into a successful and vigorous church, she has shouldered full responsibility for the financial obligations of the ministry.
Last Sunday, Mr. S. Trickery of Walton-le-Wolds, conducted one of the services. Every Wednesday evening there is a Bible Study and Fellowship meeting and a warm welcome is given by Miss Hallam to anyone interested.
Miss Hallam begins her work with several years’ experience of preaching behind her, for she has spoken in most of the Methodist and Baptist Churches of Loughborough and surrounding villages as an auxiliary on the official plans arranged by the churches. She started preaching at the age of 16.
The hall was started as a temperance mission by Mr. W. Teagle, Quorn, on whose death the word was continued by his son-in-law Mr. S. Bailey, who is giving Miss Hallam all the encouragement he can.
The good wishes, not only of her former fellow lay preachers but of all who have the advancement of religious work at heart, will be with Miss Hallam in the courageous step she has taken.
