Quorn Voters in Poll January 1775

Poll books were the pre cursor to today’s electoral rolls and were published from the late 1600s through to 1872. Generally, before 1832, only freeholders (land and property owners) could vote, although this could vary from region to region. After the 1832 Reform Act, certain tenants also qualified. Poll books recorded not only the voters, but also the way they voted. The secret ballot was not introduced until 1872.
