A reward for perseverance was how Mr Thomas Gamble of 9 Wood-lane, Quorn, described his big win in a football penny points pool on the opening day of the season. The amount he won was £7,214 17s.
A wages clerk employed by Messrs M Wright and Sons Ltd, Mr Gamble told a Loughborough Echo reporter that he had no idea what he was going to do with the money.
“I have no plans at all”, he said, “but it will not lie idle and we shall enjoy it.” Mr Gamble went to work as usual on Wednesday after learning of his good fortune and he has received congratulations all round.
Mr Gamble has been doing football coupons for several seasons and his average stake is less than 5s. he staked 3d on last week’s coupon and that included a winning line in the pool for three draws.
He has a “form book” of his own and his wife always posts the coupon.
Mr Gamble won £18 18s some years ago and the fact that he has a “lucky star” is proved by several sweepstake wins in big races.
