Company bids for Quorn Country Club shares - 1963
Loughborough Monitor - 4th October 1963
Rexall drug and chemical company, Loughborough, have made an offer for the shares of Quorn Country Club - so that they can provide accommodation for their overseas visitors.
But if the move is approved by a majority of the shareholders, the ordinary country club member should find little difference. Chairman of Rexall, Mr J A Lumley said this week: "We are at the moment engaged in a process which will mean, if it is completed, that we will own the limited company which runs the club." But he emphasised: "It is by no means a fait accompli. The individual shareholders may reject the offer when it is put to them."
He explained that his company often had to arrange accommodation for overseas visitors and for this purpose they found the club ideal. Ownership of the shares of the club with the financial backing of the Rexall company behind it, would ensure that those facilities would always be available to the firm, and it would safeguard the future of the club in the event of any future financial difficulties.
The club has 300 members, and caters mainly for businessmen in the Leicester and Loughborough areas. It was originally founded at Quorn Hall, which sold it to Loughborough College at the start of the last war. The club moved to Charnwood House, Leicester Road, the former home of Tom Firr, the well-known Quorn huntsman. The club is run by a director of the owning company, Mr M L Foss and his wife, who have been in charge for about ten years.
