After 60 years at Messrs M Wright and Sons Ltd., Quorn Mills, Quorn, Mr Jack Towell retired last week and is seen above receiving a cheque from Mr Graham Stell (managing director) in recognition of his service. Mrs Towell and workmates also attended the ceremony.
Mr Towell, aged 73, started with the firm straight from St Bartholomew's School when he was 13 and was a trainee weaver before going to the maintenance department where he remained. His first wages were nine shillings a week.
Having worked under four generations of the Wright family, Mr Towell can point to revolutionary changes in the industry, with weaving machines now operating 10 times as fast as when he started. Mr Towell, of 24 Leicester Road, Quorn, is a keen gardener and will now be able to devote more time to his hobby.
