Postcard of Loughborough Road
This postcard was posted in 1906 and shows the left hand side of Loughborough Road, looking from Quorn towards Loughborough. The two larger houses are now numbers 14 and 16, but at that time were known as Sunny Bank and Ferndale respectively. They had only been built a short time when this photograph was taken. In 1911 the houses were owned by the Speights (no 14) and Fewkes (no 16). The Fewkes in particular were a well known Quorn family. They owned a lot of land and built many houses in the village.
The photographer was William Shuttlewood, the chemist who lived and worked on High Street, where James Alvey the hairdresser is now. The negatives would have been on large glass plates. This was probably taken on a bright winter's day. The children are well wrapped up, but the light had to be good as cameras were not the sophisticated devices we have today. The exposure would also have been longer than we are used to - note the blur of the little girl on the left who couldn't keep still for the few seconds that the photographer needed.
