First event on Stafford Orchard
History made at Quorn in 1957.
History was made at Quorn on Saturday, when for the first time since the Stafford Orchard came into the hands of the Council, it was used by a local organisation for its annual event. Thus, the Friends of Markfield used the ground for their Carnival parade and gala.
The Carnival Queen, (Miss Jean Kent) was crowned by Mr W S Green (chairman of the Parish Council), who said that during his 20 years association with the Council he could not remember any local organisation sending an official invitation to the Council such as this.
Then followed the crowing of the Maypole Queen (Janet Sykes) by Matron Sheen, of Markfield Sanatorium. The Carnival Queen's attendants were Mrs Brenda Stainsby and Miss Marion Brown. The parade, which included a maypole with ribbons held by children, made a tour of the village and returned to the Stafford Orchard.
Winners were: Skittling for live pig; Mr Fuller, of Wymeswold; ladies' ankle competition: Miss Jill Clarke; darts; gents - Mr Shonk, ladies - Mrs Shonk; baby show; up to 6 months, Michael Ballard, Carol Bennett, 7-12 months, Jayne Leaper, Allan Unwin, 13-18 months, Steven Macey, Kevin Monaghan; window gazing: children, Graham Pervin, adults, Mr Peter Speight and Mrs F Thompson; Mrs F Thompson also won a shoulder of lamb given by Mrs E Sharpe.
In charge of the stalls were: skittles, Mr J Penfold; tombola, Mrs F Prevost; darts, Toc H members; devil-among-the-tailors, Mr J Taylor; bran tub, Mrs Bonsher; Aunt Sally, Mr Jack Field.
Children's sports were held in the evening, organised by Coun D Stirling, assisted by Couns Green, Smith, Swinfield and Russ.
Thanks were expressed to all, especially Mrs Kettle, who arranged for and supplied gas and electricity for the teas free of charge, and lent premises for the day. A dance was held in the Village Hall and it is estimated that about £100 will be realised.
