Station Road looking towards the village centre c1905
Station Road was known as Barrow Street at this time and on the right is the corner of Disraeli Street. Most of the buildings in the photograph are still in existence. The thatched house of the left is a very building once owned by the Sculthorpe family. At one stage it was called 'Felton Cottage' after William Felton of Quorn who married in 1657. The name stayed for 140 years after his death in 1682 for it is described as Felton's Cottage in a deed of 1821. At the time this photograph was taken it was owned by Mr David Hack, a prominent member of the Quorn Urban District Council and shopkeeper.
Here is Thomas Dexter's recollection of it from the 1890s:
"Then we come to the Stafford Orchard; then an old thatched shop and house with outbuildings, a barn and a stable, an extensive garden at the back bordering on what is now Stoop Lane where David Hack grew his crops which provided the greengrocery side of his shop."
The man in the foreground appears to be a knife grinder.
