Urban Council 1918 - Infant mortality - shortage of jam, fat and sugar to blame

Loughborough Herald - 22nd August 1918

A special meeting of this Council was held on Wednesday, to receive the report of the medical officer as to the excessive infantile mortality reported at the last ordinary meeting. Mr J D Cradock presided, and there were also present, Messrs E C Laundon, H Facer, T Shenton, T Pepper, and J H Johnson.

Dr Skipworth stated that he had reviewed the circumstances of the cases reported, and found that three deaths were due to premature births, and the remainder to bronchial complaints, tonsillitis, convulsions, whooping cough, and influenza. There were no special circumstances that would account for the deaths, but he expressed the opinion that the abnormal times, involving the shortage of sugar and fats and jam, left the juvenile system with less resisting power against illness than would otherwise be the case.

He emphasised the necessity for prompt attention and care in all matters relative scavenging, and especially to avoid accumulation of filth and garbage in ash pits and dust bins. He urged the Council to carry out their previous resolution as to the extra flushing of the main sewers, and urged householders generally to pay attention to the ventilation of their houses.

The Council expressed their thanks to Dr Skipworth for his prompt attention to their request, and for his full report, and assured him the sanitary inspector would be given full power to take whatever steps he deemed necessary for the general health and cleanliness of the village.
